One of the best players to never win a cup is not a title many players want to hold in the NHL. Alex Ovechkin was carrying that title on the back of his jersey up until last season. Rick Nash walks away from the NHL with that title.
Nash, 34, retired on Friday after having some injury problems and failing to sign with any team this season. Nash spent time with Columbus, New York, and Boston. The closest he ever got to the Cup was with New York in 2014. Nash made it to the Finals, one of his teammates during that run, Marc Staal had this to say of Nash.
“He was a great player for a really long time and I was lucky to be his teammate for five or six years.”
Rick Nash finished his career with 437 goals and tallying 368 assists.
Nash retired primarily due to concussion concerns. With NHL alums speaking out about concussions it is only a matter of time before the NHL Players Association must speak out on concussions. Daniel Carcillo has been speaking out a lot, and has called the NHL the “league of denial”.
Nash, the number 1 overall pick in 2002, leaves the league with no Stanley cups, but does have 2 gold medals with his country Canada.
Congrats on a great career to Rick Nash.
