My Condolences (Calgary/Winnipeg)

Writer's picture: Jimmy LynchJimmy Lynch

My Condolences is a running group of articles looking at teams eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Only one team gets to take home Lord Stanley for the summer, the other fifteen teams get absolutely nothing, except a mention in this article…

My Condolences to the….

Calgary Flames

I’m sorry did you guys really lose to the one lined Colorado Avalanche? They were a bunny hill of a mountain to climb and you managed to get caught in the Avalanche… Ha Punny… Calgary you had a great regular season, and will be “rewarded” Matthew Tkachuk will get a new contract from Brad Treliving. Tkachuk, known for having a younger brother in the nhl, and putting up 77 points this year, will be a restricted agent as of July 1st. Calgary also has to figure out their James Neal situation. James Neal the real deal was anything but the real deal this season. The once highly driven leader in 2 locker rooms to the final the last 2 seasons was not himself this year. Neal was a healthy scratch in game 5 when Calgary was eliminated. Let me restate that

James Neal, signed a 5 year contract with Calgary, and was a healthy scratch with Calgary facing elimination.

My Condolences Calgary, and also thank you, your signing of James Neal might make the Brent Seabrook contract look great…

Calgary will be back, as long as they figure out which goalie will be in net, Mike Smith and David Rittich can not both play goalie at the same time (did not even need to look up the rules to figure out that one). Both players played ehh during the season, Smith did however steal a game in the playoffs for Calgary.

Calgary you will return, so sorry that this season went up in Flames...

Winnipeg Jets

I do not think you understand how totally screwed Winnipeg is. 15 of their 21 man roster in the NHL has expiring contracts this season, and the Jets only have 27 million in cap space. I say only 27 million because these are big name players you need to sign. Patrik Laine can and will demand at least 10 million and that only leaves 17 million for 14 players. Jacob Trouba, Andrew Corp, Kyle Connor, and Kevin Hayes are not going to demand just a million dollars, they want to get a pay raise. I do not understand where all the money is for the Winnipeg team. It would be one thing if Winnipeg was looking at losing just a few depth players, but most of this team could possibly not be back next year with holes to fill in the lineup.

My condolences to the Winnipeg Jets, it would have been a totally different story had you battled into a deep playoff run this year, that can be justified, but a first round exit with the group you have, and will not have next year, that is hard to explain. St. Louis was a really good team, and Patrik Laine could not produce offensively for an entire Jets team. Winnipeg lost to the better team, it will be interesting to see where things go from here.
