January Player Of The Month

Writer's picture: Jimmy LynchJimmy Lynch

January 1st was the winter classic played out between the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks at Notre Dame. The winter classic is always a memorable game, but even more so in this case because it was the only game Kane did not register a point in the month of January. Patrick Kane is something else.

The Chicago Blackhawks had a record of 3-4-3 in the month of January, that really is not great, you do need to be an analyst to know that. Kane played some great hockey in the month putting up 7 goals and 14 assists, he was arguably the MVP of the Hawks and was a huge part of the teams 3 wins in the month. During the Hawks 3 wins Kane had a combined 9 points.

Patrick Kane really still believes the Hawks, who sit with just 49 points good enough for 7th out of 7 in the conference, have a shot at making the playoffs. Part of the reason for Kane’s optimism is the way the team has been playing as of late.

Jonathan Toews took a few years off between seasons but is finally having a good year with 51 points so far. Alex Debrincat is scary good when it comes to the man advantage and has 8 power play goals so far this year. Erik Gustafsson, yes you read that right, Erik GUSTAFSSON leads the Hawks blue line with 33 points. Anywho this is supposed to be about Kane.

Patrick Kane is having a career year, it is a bit disappointing that it comes in a year where the hawks will miss the playoffs, but Kane is still playing threw the charts. Kane is averaging way over a point per game, and in his 12th season in the NHL he continues to stay relevant, finishing his 8th all star game during the month of January as well.

There is still another 30 games of hockey to be played for the Hawks this year, so we have a lot of fun Kaner moments to come. The scary thing about the number 30 is that is also Kane’s age. Kane can not continue to lead the Hawks and will need to pass off the mantle to a new generation sooner rather than later, I am looking at you Alex Debrincat and Dylan Strome, as well as hopefully whatever offensive talent the Hawks gain in the draft this year.

Patrick Kane has already tied his point total from last year and with 30 games left needs just 30 more points to reach his total from his hart trophy year (106 points). The Blackhawks are going to need Kane competing at the highest level of competition for the rest of the year if they are going to make the playoffs.
