Caging The Shark
San Jose Sharks Defenseman Erik Karlsson does not have a contract for next season. The question still remains whether or not Erik will resign with San Jose, the team that traded for him this past offseason. Karlsson did not start the year that great with the team he had 7 points in the first 18 games, but that could have been because he was trying to get used to playing in a new area. Karlsson is the last 13 games has 22 points, 21 assists and 1 goal. Erik has been on a very hot stretch and San Jose wants to keep him long term.
Sharks GM Doug Wilson is expected to meet with Karlsson’s agent after the All star Game to start discussing a contract extension. Karlsson is not allowed to sign anything until after the trade deadline.
With 23 million in excepted cap space for next season San Jose has a lot to work with, however the team has players like Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton, Marcus Sorensen, and Jonas Donskoi all hitting free agency so some players will not return to this squad. Wilson is going to have to make Erik Karlsson his number 1 priority when it comes to resigns.
LA Kings defenseman is currently the highest paid defenseman in the NHL with 11 million dollars a year, San Jose may have a Defenseman asking for more money than that very soon...
