William Nylander has finally signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 22 year old forward has been the talk of the NHL for choosing to sit the first few months of the season in order to get the contract he feels he deserved. Up until this point Nylander was a restricted free agent who did not need to play a game this year. The deadline to play was signing a contract by December 1st so the Leafs and William got together to get that done.
Nylander was signed for 6.9 million for the next 6 years. Kyle Dubas, GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has a lot of tough decisions to come. With two of his best offensive weapons in Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner up for contract extensions in the next few seasons Dubas may have to move some guys.
Nylander has notched 61 points in each of his last two seasons, earning him the contract he inked this last week. However without Will, Toronto has gone 19-8-0 proving they can win without him.
Toronto can use help on defense, and rumor is that the contract hold out has created tension on both sides. Toronto may want to cut ties with Nylander and give him a fresh start in some other organization. Trading the young star would bring them back some much needed defensive assistance.
If the contract hold out was any indication we may be waiting a long time to see what Dubas does to improve the Toronto Maple Leafs, not that they need any improvement. Auston Matthews and John Tavares on 1 team can win you a Stanley Cup.
